The role of executive functions in the development of the child with autism

It is often said that the impairment of developing the executive functions is a symptom in a number of childhood disorders (autism, ADHD, ADD, depression, schizophrenia) and the cause for multiple deficits that children can display in everyday life: impulsivity, the lack of attention, difficulties in finding solutions for problems, rationality or memory problems, the lack of flexibility regarding the changes in the environment.

Executive functions represent an important aspect because the way that they are developing is relevant in predicting the abilities that the person will have and use to integrate in society and environment.

Can we develop these executive functions?

In the present paper, taking into consideration studies in the field, we want to discuss about how can we develop the executive functions and how can we do so using less-structured activities that can help practice self-directed executive functioning.
